Shima no Taiko invites taiko players from Montreal and surrounding areas to take part in a workshop to learn an extract of Sofu no Nikkiden(Grandfather's Journal), under the direction of Kokichi Kusano of The NAE Project.
Composed based on the memoirs left by his grandfather, Kokichi Kusano’s project Sofu no Nikkiden is a suite of ‘o-hayashi’ (musical accompaniment) music dedicated to the retelling and celebration of the Issei Nikkei legacy (first-generation Japanese-Canadian immigrants) and the challenges they faced in overcoming racism, discrimination, internment, and relocation all across Canada in the last century.
